The Baseball Miracle of the Splendid 6 and Towny Townsend is one of the hottest books of the summer and serves as a love letter to the game of baseball. Patrick Montgomery’s fascinating read tells the story of a man and a group of coaches who helped turn a sleepy baseball region into a baseball power house that produced six Major League Baseball All-Stars: Michael Cuddyer, David Wright, Ryan Zimmerman, B.J. Upton, Justin Upton, and Mark Reynolds.
The namesake of the book, Marvin “Towny” Townsend, had an illustrious baseball career as a player and coach. He and his fellow coaches in the area had unique perspectives about the game and life itself – and these qualities helped ignite a baseball revolution in Virginia. The story is splendid indeed, as Towny’s dream is ultimately fulfilled as six of his players go on to have extraordinary careers in Major League Baseball.
If you love baseball, you must read this book. Jeff Pearlman, 10-time New York Times Best Selling Author mentions, “folks say baseball is dying, but The Baseball Miracle of the Splendid 6 and Towny Townsend makes a day at the ballpark feel very much alive”. I certainly agree with Pearlman. Wonderfully written, the book brought me back to my early years on the field. It allowed me to remember how special baseball really is – and nostalgic for those long lazy days at the ballpark. Baseball after all, exudes nostalgia. This beautifully written throwback will make you laugh and cry as you take this deep dive into Towny’s life.

I loved this book because it reminded me how baseball has positively impacted my life in so many ways. Looking back on my own childhood, many of my fondest memories involve the game. There is nothing like it – the way it slows down time, and how being out in the sun on that green field makes you feel so alive. With this in mind, Patrick Montgomery’s love for baseball is clearly on display with each page as he weaves historical anecdotes while telling the story of Towny and The Splendid 6. In just the first few pages of the book, you’ll understand how much baseball means to the author and it makes the story all the more compelling.
As the book’s meteoric rise continues, there is even bigger news – it will also become a movie. This development came about after Montgomery shared his book with his friend, Aaron Paderewski, who is an actor, producer, director, and writer. After reading the book, Paderewski was blown away and said, “this story of Towny Townsend, it has a lot of integrity to be a great feature film that I think the American and worldwide audience would really enjoy […] There is so much more to these players, these programs, and to Towny Townsend than one book could ever do. That’s hopefully what the movie will be able to do is really show his legacy”. Paderewski hopes to start filming in the fall of 2023.
Some stories need to be told – and this is one of them. A film will add a whole new dimension to the saga. What Towny accomplished was nothing short of incredible. He did so much for kids in Virginia – helping them through the highs and lows of life, and positioning a handful of them to become MLB stars. You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, but more importantly, you’ll rise out of your chair and cheer like your team just tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.
