Black Girl White Skin: A Life in Stories by Natalie Devora

(Autobiography / Personal Memoir)

In February, we recognized and celebrated Black History Month. As we now transition to Women’s History Month, this is the perfect book to read. Black Girl White Skin touches on the intersection of identity and provides hope to readers – even in life’s darkest moments.

Natalie Devora’s fascinating memoir covers topics ranging from misogyny, colorism, racism, and sexual abuse. Perhaps most importantly, it sheds light on a topic that is not discussed enough – living with albinism. It’s a powerful and moving account about trauma. However, it’s important to note that hope is never lost. Rather, the memoir shines with optimism. It serves as a reminder that we can survive and persevere through life’s most daunting challenges.

Always an avid reader, Natalie spent years searching for the story that mirrored her own life. She dove into Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. Although each possessed elements familiar to her specific world, neither reflected her full reality. Later on, she discovered Audre Lorde and Michelle Cliff. Again, their works had parallels to her life, but none spoke fully to her identity. That’s why she took it upon herself to tell her own story – one focused on a life with albinism. The result is this breathtaking memoir that chronicles a life unlike any other.

Every person, regardless of background, has something to learn from Natalie’s book. Living as a Black woman with albinism, she navigates the world through a unique lens and has experiences that are both fascinating and heartbreaking. Her life will make you ponder identity in the truest sense – and many of her experiences will leave you speechless. Despite the struggle and trauma that albinism has caused, she finds healing grace through the power of story. There are moments that are hard to read, but it’s quite inspiring to see how Natalie has made it out to the other side – successful, strong, and compassionate.
