Taking the Risk, Meet Your Father by Dr. Alphonso Evans Sr.

(Family & Relationships, Parenting / Fatherhood)

In this terrific book, Dr. Alphonso Evans Sr. reminds us that some risks are worth taking. What began as a personal journey to find his own father evolved into a reflective adventure with 11 successful Black men to explore the impact of fatherhood in their lives. From start to finish, this book is a dynamic, thought-provoking read that allows you to understand the multifaceted dynamics of fatherhood, the role women play, and the power of a second chance.

Fatherhood means something different to everyone. Some can look back at fond memories and smile – feeling the warmth and love from a powerful, everlasting bond. However, for some, examining relationships with their fathers evokes pain and sadness. There is no singular experience – and this book demonstrates the significance of reflecting on your experiences (or lack thereof) with your father. You’ll find that coming to terms with these relationships leads to extraordinary growth and healing.

The book itself consists of a compilation of stories and experiences that will make you laugh, think, and cry. The primary focus of the book is to examine fatherhood – however it also shines light on the powerful role women play to keep young men afloat. For the fatherless, many of these women serve as unsung heroes – especially mothers, grandmothers, and aunts. Some of the stories elaborate on the sacrifices strong women had to make, and others show the pain they personally had to overcome. No matter the case, your heart will be touched by their support and unconditional love.

I highly recommend you read this book and utilize it as a vessel to think about how it relates to your own life. There are few books as introspective and relatable as this one – it’s an emotional journey that you certainly will remember for a very long time. The author presents it in such a heartfelt yet insightful manner that I found to be relatable, endearing, and captivating.
